ЛЮТИЙ (LYUTYY) Ukrainian

I. Noun — February II. Adjective — enraged, furious, violent, aggressive

As part of an excursion that took place in April 2022 in Berlin, our Master‘s Studio Culture and Identity (HfK Bremen) explored the theme of the war in Ukraine. This resulted in ten multifaceted works that approach the subject visually and narratively in various ways. How is the war perceived and communicated by the media? What do the current events mean for those directly affected? What kind of humanitarian aid is being provided, and how do those offering help cope with the situation? How do people perceive the situation, and what does this „turning point“ mean for them and for us? Our works include graphic design, photography, and various textual analyses, some of which were created through conversations and collaborations with Ukrainian refugees.

Publication

Publication Our works have resulted in a publication consisting of nine sheets formatted in the Nordic newspaper style. Each project is presented on both the front and back sides of a sheet. The publication features a semi-transparent cover, allowing a glimpse of the works inside. The cover displays our general statement about the war. The sheets are bound with a rubber band, enabling each project to serve as the cover, thereby ensuring a non-hierarchical arrangement.

With LYUTYY, we won the 2023 TDC Awards - Typography and were part of the Type Directors Club Exhibition. It was also featured in the Slanted Magazine #42—Books.

AND NOW I‘M HERE

I met with three women from Ukraine who had to flee the country and had in-depth conversations with them. I asked questions about their journey here, how they arrived, and how Germany has received them. I was careful not to ask questions that might retraumatize them. Ultimately, the three interviews went much deeper than I expected. I visited the women in their „homes,“ portraying them in their temporary accommodations. I documented their few possessions photographically and wrote down their stories.

Installation

Installation The publication was created with the intention of showcasing our work in public spaces. It was important to us to use our graphic design skills as a tool to raise awareness about the russian invasion of Ukraine and to sensitize people to the issue. Therefore, we developed our publication to also function as an installation. The nine sheets come together to form an installation measuring 2.40m x 1.70m. From a distance, one can see the inscription ЛЮТИЙ (the title of the project in Ukrainian Cyrillic), which also frames the photographic and graphic works. Additionally, all nine sheets are connected by the tenth piece, a chronicle of the first 100 days of the invasion, which overlays the installation like a gauze. Our installation was first exhibited at the political center of Bremen, at the Bremen Town Hall. To facilitate easy access and engagement with the topic, we provided the opportunity for visitors to take copies of the publication, allowing them to compile their own version of the newspaper and take it home. Since September 2022, we have repeatedly set up and showcased the installation. LYUTYY has been exhibited in Rotterdam, Leipzig, Vienna, and multiple times in Bremen.

Exhibition

Exhibition To give this important topic the attention it deserves and to highlight the works in a new and compelling manner, we have curated the Exhibition on Russia‘s War of Aggression against Ukraine. It was exciting to translate the works into a physical space, planning how they interact with each other to tell a cohesive story. My photographic piece, „The Broken Candle,“ picturing the candle which I received from Maria — one of the few items she brought from Ukraine — became the symbol of our exhibition.
